The Man of Sorrows ("Imago Pietatis")

Museum of St. Mark's Cathedral, Venice

Usually the figure of Jesus is shown waist-up in a sepulcher. Here, he is in a chalice, reflecting the Catholic belief that he is truly present in the wine that is consecrated during the Mass. The cross behind him is not uncommon in Man of Sorrows images, especially when Jesus is the only figure shown.
